          Writers...  Photographers...—talk to us!
Adventures NW is a seasonal publication that explores and celebrates the outdoor adventures and physical challenges to be had in the Pacific Northwest. Our magazine delves into not only the countless recreational and athletic possibilities the area affords, but also the stunning beauty of the landscape, issues surrounding its use, and the wide range of people who play around here. It is a publication that strives to be contextually and visually interesting, entertaining, informative and inspiring for locals and visitors.

Adventures NW was developed because there wasn’t a comprehensive and passionate publication focused on all here is to do in our region.  Oh, there are publications that come out of Seattle or Portland, but those concentrate on their own target region. Plus too many outdoor” publications available give attention only to the elites—the hard-core racers.  Adventures NW recognizes that not everyone is an elite, that many race or play outdoors only occasionally or just not enough.  We want to help change that.

It starts with the writing and photographs in Adventures NW and the recognition of an imperative that we all need to be more connected with our outdoor environment: camping, running, skiing, cycling, climbing, fishing, walking, sailing, hiking, contemplating…adventures to enliven ourselves and our families more fully.  These are the adventures we want to share with our readers, be they elite or casual racers, twice-a-year family hikers, organized trip participants, a couple just discovering what’s outside, or armchair adventurers.  Be they native to the area, camera-toting tourists from Wisconsin, or anyone in between, your writing and pictures can reach them through the pages of Adventures NW

We’re doing what we do because we love it, and we’re looking for quality contributors who feel the same. Face it, living and playing in and around the Pacific Northwest is a good thing, whether it’s hopping through first-run new powder at Baker, cycling through the tulip fields of Skagit Valley, trail running up Chin Scraper on Chuckanut Mountain, gunkholing about a new cove on Lopez Island, or mountain biking above Sedro Woolley.  Share your passion with readers of Adventures NW .

         Stories

Feature Articles on outdoor activities and adventure are welcome but generally limited to Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties and surrounding area (roughly the Cascades to the San Juan Islands, north of Seattle to Vancouver, B.C.). Personal narratives, area descriptions, environmental/conservation issues, wildlife exposés, historical anecdotes: we’re open to all. Length should be in the range of 800-1,400 words. Please send a detailed query by the date (below) relevant to your story.

Profiles of eminent and/or interesting local outdoor personalities are welcome.

Personal Essays are also a semi-regular part of the magazine, if they’re appropriate to the season, etc. These essays should be thoughtful, entertaining and well-informed. Writing more on the reflective side is good for these pieces.

Departments -- shorter pieces fitting into any of the following categories:
Seasonal Sports Stories • Nature Facts • Cover to Cover (book reviews) • Featured Trails/Routes • Repair Tips • Nutrition/Food Articles or Dining Our for Active People • Getting Away (local or travel destination) • Upcoming Races & Outdoor Events • Environmental Focus Story • Body Work/Sports Medicine/Training/Form Advice • Gear & Garb Reviews

Note: Because Adventures NW is a free publication with limited resources, all articles are on spec, accepted query or not. Unsolicited material is not guaranteed to run, and pay for published pieces will be dependent on length, quality, originality, amount of editing required, advertising support, and writer tenure with Adventures NW .  Material cannot be returned. Payment occurs 30-45 days after publication. Unfortunately, we cannot pay kill fees.
